Powerful in Prayer was the theme of our camp this year. We spent months and countless hours in preparation for my first camp director experience. I was surrounded by a great team and was so proud of the way it all came together.

Sunday, I had planned to make all the final arrangements and tie up all the loose ends with I got the phone call from Jennifer that her water had broke. (Heidi, our friend was with us for the delivery and did an incredible job documenting it if you want to check it out on her blog. She’s a photographer and has some incredible pictures.) I spent the next two hours on the phone organizing people to work on my behalf. When I arrived Monday afternoon it appeared as though I wasn’t needed…that’s a good thing.

I wish I had been writing throughout the process because it’s hard to summarize such a special and extended time, but I hope the attached slide show is helpful. We started our overnight camp with lice shampoo for everyone and new camp T-shirts. Kids were divided into countries recognizable by different colors. Each cabin painted the most beautiful flag representing their country. On the final night they presented their flags in a cultural performance and prayed for the struggles unique to their country. It was really moving and I believe just a small taste of promise that one day the nations will unite in worship. There were all the elements that make a camp, camp…crafts, sports, swimming, singing, camp fires, hot dogs and marshmallows, games and competitions. But this camp even had cotton candy, fireworks, children from four different countries, and learning how to serve.

We took the kids to the hospital and the government preschool to present gifts they had prepared, sing songs, and pray. We really want our kids to feel empowered in their ability to give and serve. I think we are on the right track and I’m already thinking of next year.

Hey Joy,
So cool! I love it, love it, love it. From grouping the kids to nations, to the flags, to letting them give and serve, to the worship, to the fun with God and each other! Sounds so cool. Wow! I can’t keep up with you and the team. May the Lord continue giving you greater wisdom, revelation, and strength! ~keith
