Fighting the Funk

It’s always there in the background: a gray, looming spirit of depression. Though I am usually successful in keeping it quiet it roars every now and again. It threatened to consume me the other day and I was really feeling it. I called my dear friend Wanda down from the kitchen above my office in the school. She seems to be able to call down all the angels in heaven with her prayers and as she prayed I felt every word speak to my heart, crying out on my behalf and bringing a blanket of peace to cover my troubled mind. Then she sat down to offer encouragement and as she spoke in simplicity, her words made me realize exactly what I needed to be reminded of…

“You know the story of Moses, right,” she asked. “I just love that story. Can you imagine being witness to the power of God like that? Remember the burning bushes, plagues, Passover, splitting seas, food from heaven; just one marvel after another…it’s the kind of power that can sustain you in the desert. That’s our God,” she said with tears in her eyes. “He’s the same big, powerful, loving, providing, sea splitting God. Consider that…it will sustain you.”
