What a Surprise!

All have heard about the destruction that happened because of the tornado. It did a great deal of damage in La Vega. These days have been a very special time, for me, to reflect upon the value we put upon material things and how insignificant they really are. On a day like Sunday, in the morning all the people were very calm in their humble homes. Then about 2 pm, in just a 15 minute time period, these same people were left with nothing.

There are a lot of people that grieve their losses and others who sit and think about what they are going to do next. Some of the El Camino Church leaders went around our community to see who had been affected by this phenomenon. The reality was that some people lost the roofs to their homes, and that’s sad. Yet it’s so cool to see the hands of God working in each thing. Specifically, I was visiting someone’s house who has visited our church (Tono, Flora’s brother). I found out that he and his family of 4, including his pregnant wife, were now all living in a small room just a few meters long and a few meters wide because they’d lost the roof to the rest of the house.

Tono's House

The surprising thing wasn’t seeing this situation, but seeing how at peace they seemed to be and how they weren’t angry with God about what had happened. This impacted me a great deal, as I thought about how much I complain to God when things don’t turn out the way I want. The truth is that this really surprised me and that’s why I wanted to write about this experience. Sometimes people who aren’t part of a church and aren’t Christians are more content than us Christians.

Tienes razon hermano!

Definitely a lesson everyone should reflect on. I am thankful for the family, friends and health God has shared with me, but it is easy to get caught up in the bad things that happen in life and forget the small everyday gifts we have around us. Thanks Bau.
