Spend a day around T.E.A.R.S. and you are likely to hear more that one language, namely: Spanish, Creole, and English. There are a few that can speak all three and I recently met a Haitian brother who can speak Creole, Spanish, English, and French….and is working on Italian. In addition to being very multi-lingual, Emmanuel Felix (pictured left in group photo), is volunteering as a tutor at an afternoon study group with children, is a university student studying industrial electrical, and recently graduated from the 2-year pastoral training program of the Haitian Bible Institute (a ministry of T.E.A.R.S.) Along with fellow graduates Manes Desobry, and Jacques Agénord, Emmanuel has a strong vision to impact the Haitian community in the Dominican Republic with the gospel.
There are currently over 1 million Haitians living in the DR. When they come to this country they are eager to find a community and often find that in the Christian community. As such, pastors and leaders, like Emmanuel, are earnestly seeking God’s direction for their community and how sharing the gospel and addressing physical needs can be done in an integrated way.
It was a privilege to see these graduates have their accomplishments celebrated. They are deeply dedicated to serving God and making Christ know in their communities. I invite you to remember pastors in the Haitian community who have a unique opportunity to work in the Haitian community here in the DR–a community that is ever growing and that faces many economic and social challenges every single day.
