All aboard for a field trip to Salcedo! Yesterday, I got to join the students on a 45-minute trip to a museum in Salcedo dedicated to remembering the lives and work of the Mirabal sisters. Riding on a big bus, singing songs, and snacking en route it was a true field trip complete with rain and some road-sick-stomachs!
The Mirabals were four sisters who grew up in Salcedo, Dominican Republic during the era of the dictator Rafael Trujillo. Three of them — Minerva, Patria, and Maria Teresa — were killed by Trujillo’s henchmen for their involvement in efforts to overthrow the fascist government. The surviving sister, Bélgica (more commonly known as Dedé), lives in Salcedo, tending the museum in Ojo de Agua that commemorates her sisters. The Mirabal sisters, now national heroines of the Dominican Republic, have been immortalized in poem, fiction, art, and even with an international day dedicated to them (Click HERE for more information)
Thank you for your support of T.E.A.R.S. ministry which impacts the lives of these students. So many students never have the opportunity to see the many beautiful and interesting areas of their own country. What a gift not only to be providing education but unique opportunities like this where they can expand their knowledge and understanding of their country and world. We invite you to remember Campamento (February 2009) in your prayers as planning and preparations are underway. This too is a great time of singing, learning, games, sleepless nights, crafts, and discovery of God’s deep care and love for them.

Teachers from Canada, check out those journals at work. I love to see teacher training in action. Thanks to those of you who come and help me! Joy

My favorite book, “In the Time of the Butterflies”, by Julia Alvarez is about the Mirabal sisters. How exciting that you got to visit the museum in Salcedo! I would love to go there someday. Their story is so moving.
