In the first year of offering T.E.A.R.S. School we provided a Christian education to 60 needy children, working to meet their mental, physical and spiritual needs. T.E.A.R.S. School currently serves 100 students (from pre-school through 4th grade) from the barrio of María Auxiliadora, one of the poorest and most dangerous barrios in the Dominican Republic. We are a small school, but we are working to provide excellence in all that we do.
These children receive a solid educational base in core curriculum from certified Dominican teachers who are working through intensive training in the use of best practices, teaching strategies, and literacy development. As this training takes place, materials to integrate these strategies are being put in their classrooms ensuring their implementation and creating a new level of excellence at T.E.A.R.S. Classrooms have 20 or fewer students allowing teachers to maintain intimate relationships with students and their families and well as better meet their individual needs.
We go beyond the walls of the school by building and providing family counseling, along with regular home visitations of each child. In addition they are being instructed in such areas such as art, physical education, English as a second language and training in personal hygiene. We provide each child with school supplies, vitamins, full pediatric care, periodic medical and dental clinics, uniforms and a nutritional daily meal. They are daily exposed to God’s Word in a loving environment, and being trained in social skills with a strong emphasis placed on Biblical character.
